Wanda Jackson - Blues Instrumental, Stage
The list of guitarists influenced by Wanda Jackson is long. For many, her playing has become the ultimate expression of blues-rock guitar, the ultimate tool for kicking up that classic blues jam. I'm not one of those guitarists. I'm usually content with my Jacksons, my Hank Snows, my Ray Robertses, and my D.J. Robertses. But I do love to hear, for example, Jackson covering Hound Dog. I also love the original Hound Dog, of course. But if I didn't have that, and a) heard her on the CCM College Choir Show from an old CBS radio show, and b) heard her doing "Hound Dog" on the compilation album "Twangin', Twanglin' and Swingin' the Blues" I have just recently purchased, it'd probably be in a very different place.
I love the sound of her live performance and her writing, too. There's a wry edge to her attitude and her emphasis that's familiar to any blues guitarist. For example, when she says that John Lee Hooker is the man to follow, it sounds both like her personal preference and also a credible direction for the student. But the key is that you can't be as good as him.
At the end of "Twangin', Twanglin' and Swingin' the Blues," Jackson acknowledges "the great blues lovers" who made it possible. Among those people and groups is Sun Records. When Jackson recorded for Sun, she was a Memphis teenager still in school, and was unaware of the fact that Sun had already sold the original Hound Dog to Chess Records. But Sun had built a reputation and a roster of successful records. Not just a young woman on the up-and-up.
